Every day in May new colors, scents and inspirations appear. This sparkling mood is also clearly felt in the creative activities of the artistic groups of the University of Latvia, which in May invite you to heartfelt concerts, magnificent performances and bright cultural moments - whether they be anniversary concerts, commemorative events or festive programs. Take a look at the May event program, choose the events that interest you and indulge in cultural joy together with the collectives of the University of Latvia!

On May 1 and 2, the UL Student Theatre will participate in the theatre festival Pērses krastos, taking place at the Koknese Culture House. More than 10 different theatre groups will perform throughout the event. Admission to each performance is 3 EUR, with a day ticket available for 8 EUR. On May 3, the UL mixed choir “Juventus” will take part in the memorial concert We Are Composed dedicated to the beloved poet and leader, Jānis Peters. The programme will feature well-known Latvian songs with lyrics by Jānis Peters, performed by “Juventus,” the Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music School Boys' Choir, the Riga Dome Boys' Choir, and the mixed choir “Balsis.” The concert begins at 4:00 PM at Koknese Hall and will be led by Zigfrīds Muktupāvels. On May 4, the UL mixed choir “Aura” invites everyone to the ceremonial address and festive concert Roots that Bind at the VEF Culture Palace. In honour of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia’s independence, a free festive concert will also take place at the Freedom Monument, featuring popular musicians such as Ance Krauze, Dināra Rudāne, Madara Botmane, Igo, Jānis Aišpurs, and a range of choirs and dance groups. 

On May 5, the UL dance ensemble “Dancis” will perform in a graduation concert at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, starting at 7:00 PM. On the same day, the UL dance ensemble “Dancītis” will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a festive concert Let the Earth Resound While Dancing… at the VEF Culture Palace, beginning at 5:00 PM. On May 9, the UL dance ensemble “Pērle” will celebrate its 15th anniversary with the concert On the Green Branch, sharing their joy of dance and movement. The performance will take place at the VEF Culture Palace at 6:00 PM. Learn more on the event's Facebook page.

On May 10, the UL mixed choir “Dziesmuvara” will mark its 100th anniversary with a grand concert Celies līdzi. The performance celebrates unity, friendship, and the choir’s history, referencing the lyrics of its anthem. The concert will be held at the Latvian Railway Museum at 7:00 PM. Entry is by ticket. On May 12, the UL dance ensemble “Dancis” invites you to Three Knots, the graduation concert of Viesturs Juris Lammas, taking place at the VEF Culture Palace at 7:00 PM. This unique performance explores the past, present, and future through the metaphor of a knotted ball of dance. Tickets are available at Biļešu Paradīze.

On May 14, the UL chamber choir “Decoro” will perform in the In Memoriam concert at Riga’s Old St. Gertrude Church, beginning at 8:00 PM.

On May 17, the UL Early Music Ensemble “Canto” will perform an inspiring concert programme for Museum Night in the UL Great Hall at 7:00 PM. Meanwhile, the UL dance ensemble “Dancis” will present a joyful concert for the residents of Inčukalns. More information will be announced soon.

On May 18, the UL male choir “Presidia Convention Male Choir” will perform a charity concert at the Sloka Health and Social Care Centre.

On May 24, the UL female choir “Balta” will present the concert Dziesmu vīneags at Mežotne Castle, starting at 6:00 PM. With a deeply moving programme in a beautiful historic setting, the concert is supported by the Pēteris Vasks Foundation.

On May 29, at 4:00 PM, the UL Student Theatre will host the 135th anniversary performance of N. Malta in the UL Botanical Garden. More details will be shared soon.

And finally, on May 31, two exciting events will wrap up the month. The UL mixed choir “Aura” will take part in the concert IV General Latvian Song and Music Festival in Jelgava – 130, while the alumni mixed choir “Jubilate” will participate in the Anthem Honor Day in Viļķene, marking the 190th anniversary of Baumanis Kārlis.
