University of Latvia Culture Centre; Culture Agenda in July

July continues the lively summer rhythm of cultural life at the University of Latvia (LU) with international competitions, festivals, and concerts in Latvia and neighboring countries. Groups participate in choral and traditional music events, showcasing UL's choirs, folk dance ensembles, and theater, while also performing at major local cultural events and music festivals. See you at the cultural events in July!

From July 3 to 6, the 5th International Budapest Choral Competition and the competition for the “Grand Prix” will take place in Budapest. The mixed choir “Dziesmuvara” from the University of Latvia will participate in the competition. We wish them luck and success! More detailed information about the event.

From July 3 to 6, Lithuania will host “Folk Lithuania”—an international festival of traditional music and dance—which will also feature the University of Latvia’s folk dance group “Dandari.” The three-day program includes master classes, seminars, and dances set to traditional music from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and France. Tickets can be purchased on the organizers’ website.

From July 10 to 12, the University of Latvia’s folk dance group “Dandari” will participate in another festival in Klaipėda, Lithuania – the International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival “Lauksnos.” “Lauksnos” is a Prussian word meaning “stars” or “lights.”

Now in its fifth year, the festival brings together practitioners of traditional culture from around the world and invites visitors to discover unique elements of intangible cultural heritage: music, dance, folklore, and masterpieces of folk art.

Through various formats, the festival showcases elements included in the lists regulated by the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Since 2017, the events of this biennial festival – concerts, theater performances, workshops, exhibitions, discussions, and craft demonstrations – have attracted more than 15,000 visitors each year. The festival program and more information about the festival.

On July 11, a concert dedicated to the work of Raimonds Pauls, titled “Manai Dzimtenei,” will take place in Mežaparks, featuring the University of Latvia Women’s Choir “Balta” (artistic director Māra Marnauza). More information about the event is available on the organizer’s website.

From July 17 to 19, the international music and arts festival “Laba daba” will take place at the University of Latvia’s “Ratnieki” conference complex. This year, the festival will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The event’s program also includes a performance by the University of Latvia’s mixed choir “Dziesmuvara.” More than 100 music and art events are planned, including concerts, DJ sets, theater performances, dance performances, poetry readings, film screenings, creative workshops, master classes, sports activities, and a craft market. More information about the festival and tickets are available on the organizers’ website

On July 25 at 12:00 p.m., amateur theater groups from Latvia and Lithuania will gather at the Durbe Cultural Center to present their repertoire of performances. The University of Latvia Student Theater will participate in the event. More information is available on the event organizers’ Facebook page.

The “Pliņķītis gurķos” festival offers an opportunity to enjoy performances by various amateur theater groups in one place, learn about the theatrical traditions of our neighboring country, and spend a summer day in a creative and friendly atmosphere.
